Humans have long attempted to stay connected with their late loved ones. Many people, however, are against mediumship, arguing that it is best to let the dead be. But the practice, which is also known as spiritualism, remains very much alive today.
Mediumship has been around for a long time. After inventing the phonograph, Thomas Edison planned to develop a device for communicating with the dead (spirit phone), the first documented attempt to scientifically communicate with the dead. Before Edison’s device, other prominent personalities, most notably Queen Victoria, had attempted to reach out to the dead. Victoria is believed to have used a local medium to contact her dead husband Prince Albert and seek his advice on political matters.
